Satellite Broadband Ireland FAQ

How big are the dishes?
The largest size of our dishes is 96cm.

Can the system support Apple Mac?
Yes. With all our services connection via non Microsoft Windows platforms is straightforward

Does weather effect the dish?
The service is designed to cope with most weather conditions and wind speeds up to 100mph. During periods of extremely heavy rain or snow the radio signals could become attenuated (reduced) and you may experience a slight "slowing" of the service for such a period. There are, however, sophisticated and automatic measures to effectively increase the power of your system to compensate for any attenuation.

How long does it take to install the dish & modem?
A typical standard installation of the dish and modem will take approximately 2-3 hours.

What direction does the dish need to face?
The dish will be positioned at 135 degrees facing south east.

Does it support VOIP?
Yes, all of our packages will support VOIP.

What is FAP?
To ensure fair Internet access for all satellite broadband subscribers, Satellite Broadband Ireland maintains a Fair Access Policy (FAP). This policy establishes an equitable balance in Internet access for satellite broadband  subscribers. Satellite Broadband Ireland assigns a download threshold to each service plan that limits the amount of data that may be downloaded during a typical day. A small percentage of subscribers who exceed this limit will experience a temporary reduction of speed.

Explanation:
The Fair Access Policy is straightforward. Based on an analysis of customer usage data, Satellite Broadband Ireland has established a download threshold for each of the service plans that is well above the typical usage rates. Subscribers who exceed that threshold will experience reduced download speeds for approximately 24 hours.

During this recovery period, the satellite broadband service may still be used, but speeds will be slower. Web browsing, for example, will be significantly slower than subscribers’ normal browsing experience. Subscribers will return to normal download speeds after the recovery period as long as they minimize their bandwidth-intensive activities. If they continue these activities during this recovery period, reduced download speeds may continue beyond 24 hours.
What areas are covered?
We can supply broadband to anywhere in Ireland.

Do I need a phone or phone line?
No, the Satellite Broadband Ireland  satellite system does not require a telephone line. It is a two way satellite therefore independent of the telephone lines.

How long is the process, from booking to installation?
Under normal circumstances you should be installed & operating within 10 days from providing payment details to Satellite Broadband Ireland.

Can I have an Irish IP address?
Yes, all Satellite Broadband Ireland customers will have an Irish IP address.

I’ve heard of latency issues with satellite broadband. What does this mean?
Due to the distance travelled by the signal to/from your computer and the Internet Hub, via the satellite, older satellite technologies exhibited a noticeable lag between communications. The Satellite Broadband service employs software techniques to minimise this lag, including an Internet Protocol Accelerator, IPA. In use, when a web page is requested for example, the IPA strips out surplus protocol data and requests, and retrieves the page in fewer larger 'pieces', than a typical dialup connection for example which assembles the page piece by piece. Similarly this technique is ideal for handling large file or email downloads.

Do I need landlords permission?
If you do not directly own your building, you will require the permission of the Landlord to install a satellite dish and this should be obtained in writing. Satellite Broadband Ireland does not take any responsibility for obtaining such permissions from landlords or for any consequences should such permission not being obtained by the customer.

What happens if I move house?
Simply contact Satellite Broadband Ireland and we will arrange for the de-installation of the equipment and its re-installation at your new location. Obviously charges will apply for these activities which will be advised when the details of the move are made known to us. No additional charges would be made to restore you monthly satellite service.

What is a standard installation?
A standard installation applies to sites throughout Ireland comprises of the outdoor & indoor satellite equipment, up to 50meters of connecting cable from the dish, a right angled wall mount and earthed to a suitable point within 2 meters of the indoor unit location.

What are the non-standard installation charges?
Satellite Broadband Ireland does not seek to make more money by charging customers for additional non-standard equipment and/or services. It is a fact, however, that by the physical nature/orientation of certain sites the dish cannot always achieve a line of sight using a right-angled wall mount and an alternative mount may be needed. Equally, some customers have particular requirements where additional time, services or other materials may be required e.g. false ceilings, high roof/access areas, etc. In all instances the Satellite Broadband Ireland installation engineers will attend site equipped with the aim to complete all installations on the single site visit. Any Non- Standard elements presented by the particular site and/or customer requirements will be advised and explained to that customer on the day of installation together with the associated charges. Customers are required to call Satellite Broadband Ireland at that time and pay these non-standard charges using a credit/debit card and before the installation works commence at the site.

Can I send the broadband signal throughout the house?
Yes. Each installation is supplied with a wired modem. If you require a wireless signal, you will need to purchase a wireless cable router and connect it to our modem.

Can the installation engineer connect up my home network?

Our engineers will fully install the system and demonstrate it prior to the completion of the installation. However, due to the complexity and bespoke nature of some businesses and home networks we will not as standard connect the system directly in to a network.
